I am in a domestic violence situation - can I call A Woman’s Place and receive financial aid? A Woman's Place has limited funds and cannot give financial assistance to anyone who is not a client. If you are a victim of domestic violence we will assist you through the screening process and if you are eligible to become a client at A Woman's Place we will provide you with safe shelter and services. We will also help you to contact agencies that can assist you with various needs if we cannot assist you. The limited funds that we have for emergency client assistance have been designated by the donor of these funds to clients of A Woman's Place. It is our responsibility to ensure that all funds that we receive are used for their designated purpose.
As a family member, friend or law enforcement person, why can’t I call A Woman’s Place and receive information about a woman staying at the shelter? As a shelter for survivors of domestic violence we are required by law to not give out any information about current clients or past clients to anyone unless the client signs a release specifically telling us who we can speak with, and what we can speak about. All releases of information have a restricted time period during which they are valid. Based on the law, if we were to give out information about a client to her mother or a police officer or anyone else without a written release, we would be breaking the law. We are always able to take a message and post it on the message board which all of our clients have access to. In addition, even though we cannot tell you this when you call, if the person you are looking for is in the safe house we will immediately give her the message – but without a release we will never give anyone information about a client.
Can I call A Woman’s Place about my daughter, give you her phone number, and have you call her? We are available to all who call our crisis line, however, our policy is to not call victims. This is for the safety of the victim. If the abusive partner were to find out the victim was receiving information from a shelter for domestic violence, it would put the victim in serious danger. Please do, however, feel free to give our crisis number to anyone so they can call us – 970-356-4226 or 1-866-356-4226 toll free.
Where do I get a civil protection order and how much do they cost? Go to the Weld County Clerk’s Office located on the first floor of the Centennial Building – 915 10 Street, Greeley. The Clerk will provide you with the paperwork for the protection order – you will fill that out and return it to the clerk (takes 30 minutes to an hour). If you are a domestic violence victim or sexual assault/sexual abuse victim there is no filing fee. All other cases cost $46, unless you complete further paperwork and the judge finds you unable to afford the filing fee. For victims of domestic violence, you can always contact A Woman’s Place to seek assistance with a civil protection order. A Woman’s Place is able to provide the necessary paperwork and assistance in properly filling it out, and is also available to provide support at the court.
Can I bring my children and pets to A Woman’s Place? All potential clients of A Woman’s Place must complete a screening process. If the woman is accepted into the shelter, her children will be allowed to live with her as well. If your children are teens, they may be asked to complete a separate screening. Sorry, no pets are allowed, but we will assist you in finding a safe place for your pet to stay while you are in shelter.
My landlord told me that if the police get called to our home one more time we will be evicted - is their any thing I can do? COLORADO LAW: Col. Rev. Stat. Ann. § 13-40-104(4) and § 13-40-107.5(5). This law prohibits a landlord from evicting a tenant for a “substantial violation” and provides that a tenant shall not be guilty of an unlawful detention of real property if the tenant is a victim of domestic violence and if the domestic violence was the cause of or resulted in the alleged substantial violation or unlawful detention. The domestic violence must have been documented by a police report or a valid civil or emergency protection order. These protections may not be waived by the tenant in a rental, lease, or other such agreement. They explicitly do not prevent the landlord from taking actions against a tenant or lessee that perpetuated the violence or abuse. (Source www.legalmomentum.org).
Does A Woman’s Place provide domestic violence counseling? Yes. A Woman’s Place has recently resumed providing domestic violence counseling on a resident and non-resident basis.
If I make a donation to A Woman’s Place, where does that money go? All donations, whether monetary or in-kind, are documented and tracked. Monetary donations that are designated for a certain purpose, such as 'emergency funds for clients' are noted as such and only used for that specific purpose. Monetary donations that are not specifically designated are used for general operating costs which can assist with such expenses as utilities, salaries, groceries for the client kitchen, building upkeep etc. In-kind donations are sorted, documented and kept in our donation room which has been recently organized so that when a client has a particular need our advocates know where to go to find that item. |
