About A Woman’s Place

Introduction

Welcome to A Woman’s Place.  We are located in Weld County Colorado.  A Woman’s Place is a safe shelter for survivors of domestic violence.  We offer resources, education and case management as well.

Mission

Our Mission: to shelter and help empower victims/survivors of domestic abuse to become safe, secure and self-reliant; and through education and collaboration, to mobilize our community to help prevent domestic violence

The History of A Woman’s Place

Prior to 1977, the local chapter of National Organization for Women (NOW) started a rape crisis line, which has since become Sexual Assault Survivors, Inc (SASI).  In 1977 NOW formed a Battered Women’s Task Force to identify and work towards solving the domestic violence issues in Greeley and the greater Weld County.  A Battering Incident Survey began being conducted in the area.  With only a 29% return rate of the surveys, they found there were 3 incidents daily of women being abused.  It was determined that a long term comprehensive shelter was needed for abused women and children. Although one woman in the community had a bed she kept open for battered women, this wasn’t nearly enough to meet the demands of the community.  As a result, A Woman’s Place was established as a not-for-profit organization.  Although there was no shelter in place initially, a crisis line was established (with the same phone number we have today).

In 1980, an older home and land was provided to A Woman’s Place by Greeley Urban Renewal Authority.  The home needed to be moved across town to its new location, a basement needed to be dug, the inside needed to be rebuilt and furnished.  The shelter eventually became a reality with a dedication in December of 1980 and the opening of its doors in January 1981.  The dream became a reality through many fundraisers, donations from Monfort Family Foundation, Greeley Association of Banks, Weld County, the City of Greeley, Greeley Excavation and numerous community contributions.  In 2003, a completed addition project doubled the size of our safe house so that we would not have to turn women and their children away due to lack of space.

Friends of A Woman’s Place

Friends of A Woman’s Place is an organization which was formed in the early ‘90’s to support A Woman’s Place.  Friends of A Woman’s Place has three main purposes: fundraising, educating about domestic violence and honoring outstanding women in Weld County.

Friends of A Woman’s Place’s fundraising efforts have grown from raising  $3000 during its first year, to raising over $75,000 in 2006.  The organization is the single largest donator to A Woman’s Place.

Members of Friends of A Woman’s Place are in the community talking about domestic violence.  With over 200 members, in terms of fundraising, there’s a lot of necessary conversation around the topic of domestic violence!

In addition, Friends of A Woman’s Place sponsors The Gala, a celebration of outstanding women.
